Back home, I’m in my pj’s, playing through the events of the evening while I wait in the living room for Gram to get back.

Ten minutes ago, according to FindU, she was in Tynemouth, though it’s a bit late to be visiting Great-Gran. Visiting ends at nine, and it’s already nine thirty. Perhaps they allowed her to stay a bit later.

Boydy and I hadn’t really said much on the way back to his house. The only thing to say was “Oh my God, what are we going to do?” And as both of us knew that the other didn’t have an answer, it seemed pointless to say anything.

Boydy’s mum was up when we got back, and Boydy introduced us. She’s OK, his mum, just a bit dippy. She’s got dark rings under her eyes and an exhausted look about her. She gave me this soppy, lips-together smile with her head on one side, and said, “You have a lovely aura.”

“Um, thanks.” I had no idea what she meant, but I think she was being nice.

As an aside to Boydy, she added, “Lovely manners. See, Elliot—you could do a lot worse.”

I had no idea what that meant either, but Boydy rolled his eyes at me in solidarity.

The last thing his mum said was “I’ll leave you two…alone.” And I swear that she left out some words, as if what she wanted to say was “I’ll leave you two lovebirds alone,” but she didn’t dare.

The very idea that Boydy and I might be a couple is just so completely ludicrous that I almost laughed.

Anyway, with his mum out of the way, Boydy and I sat opposite each other, with a mug of tea each, and decided on a plan of action.

Apparently, I’m going to break into the Knights’ house and steal Jesmond’s phone.

It took a while to get there, as you’ve probably guessed. I wasn’t thrilled, as you can also guess. But neither of us could think of another way to ensure that the twins don’t show everyone that video.

In fact, I’m a bit surprised that it isn’t all around the school already, uploaded onto YouTube, and being viewed in Tokyo or somewhere. But then, I’m not factoring in the Knight twins’ willingness to wait and see what they can extract from the situation. Exactly how long they will wait is anyone’s guess.

“It’s perfect,” said Boydy, when we came up with our plan, smacking his lips after gulping his tea. “You make yourself invisible, get into their house, and get their phones. Piece of cake.”

“Oh yeah. Piece of cake. If you’re not the one doing it, that is.”

He looked hurt. “I’ll help.”

“How?”

“Dunno, exactly. I’ll be your wingman.”

“My what?”

“It’s an expression my dad uses. I think it means ‘helper.’ ”

I simply could not think of a single way that Boydy could help me stage an elaborate burglary with the victims still in the house, but I didn’t say so. Instead I drew his attention to another problem that I had spotted.

“That clip they showed us—it was edited.
